A week after Gerald McClellan suffered a knockout that left him on life support in a London hospital, Argentine super-bantamweight Sergio Liendo, who had never been knocked down, was knocked out for more than a minute in the second round of a World Boxing Association fight at Livingstone, Scotland, by the unbeaten British fighter Naseem Hamed.

Natasha Zvereva upset No. 1-seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario (7-5), 6-3 in an Evert Cup tennis semifinal at Indian Wells, Calif. Mary Joe Fernandez upset Naoko Sawamatsu 6-4, 7-6 in the other.

Australian Mark Philippoussis upset top-seeded Todd Martin 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 to become the first qualifier since 1988 to reach today’s final of the MassMutual tennis championships in Scottsdale, Ariz. Philippoussis, ranked 272nd in the world, will face second-seeded Jim Courier, who beat Stefan Edberg 6-4, 7-5, 6-4.
