Suspect Arrested In Drive-By Shooting

From Staff And Wire Reports

A Spokane teenager who police believe was involved in a South Hill drive-by shooting was arrested Monday for reckless driving, after nearly hitting a police car.

Two officers said the teen’s car was traveling about 70 mph near Southeast Boulevard and Hatch, where the two cars nearly collided. The driver stopped suddenly at Garfield and 10th Avenue and three teenagers ran from the car.

Police finally caught all three, including one who had jumped into a taxi cab.

Shortly before the officers spotted the speeding car, two residents reported the teens racing through their neighborhood. One of the residents was Mike Herbst, 18, whose home on the 300 block of West 19th was sprayed with bullets and shotgun pellets early Sunday.

Herbst told police he thought the teens speeding by his home Monday were the shooters. He went to the police station, but could not identify the suspects.

The 16-year-old driver was cited for reckless driving and for driving without a license. His friends were cited for refusing to cooperate with police and released.

One of the boys was carrying more than $900 in cash and a pager that police said went off every few minutes. , DataTimes MEMO: Cut in Spokane edition
