Nc, Lc Teachers Chosen As Writing Awards Judges

Dennie Crowe and Sally Pfeifer have been appointed by the National Council of Teachers of English to be regional judges for the 1995 NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing.

The competition cites some 800 high school seniors nationwide for writing excellence. They are then recommended to colleges and universities for admission and for financial aid.

Crowe teaches at North Central, and Pfeifer at Lewis and Clark.

Kristianne Blake, a Spokane resident, was one of a family of volunteers honored by the SeattleKing County Association of Realtors at its 1995 First Citizen Award Banquet.

The family of Mary Gates is the first entire family to be honored in the award’s 57-year-old history. Gates was recognized posthumously for her lifelong support in the Puget Sound area.

Blake, her oldest daughter, is involved in Spokane’s United Way, Junior League and the Spokane Community College Foundation.

Ed Gaffney, director of special services at Spokane School District 81, has been elected a trustee by the Spokane Parks and Recreation Foundation. He has been with the school district since 1970.

Michael Drake, son of Greg and Janice Drake, has been named an All-American Scholar by the U.S. Achievement Academy. He is a student at Coeur d’Alene High School.

Robyn Ohashi, daughter of Robert and Tricia Ohashi, Spokane, recently graduated from the University of Puget Sound, Tacoma with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. She is a 1991 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.

Kara Potts, Wenatchee, and David Jones, Spokane, recently graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington. Potts earned a master of business administration degree, and Jones earned a doctorate of music.

Western Washington University has announced the following students have recently graduated: Kris Dunham-Fuller, Clarkston, Wash.; Matthew Buechler, Kennewick; Erika Ottmar, Medical Lake; Aaron Crayne, Pasco; Paul Migaki, Pullman; Diana Dauble and Daniel Porter, both of Richland; Laurel Lea May, Patricia Stehr, Todd Brownlee and Sharon O’Reilly, all of Spokane; Kristi Krausz and Robert Cobb, both of Walla Walla; Stephen Donovan, Wenatchee; and Mark Johnson, Moscow, Idaho.

The following students have graduated from Regents College, The University of the State of New York, Albany, N.Y.: Lynn Brault, Spokane; Peter Rannells, Pasco; Robert Day-Phalen, Richland; and Ronna Vanover, Clarkston, Wash.

The following students have been awarded a Presidential Scholarship at Carroll College, Helena: Erin Cook, Kelli Fitzsimmons, Meredith Giesa, Heather Kaschmitter, Kristina Kimbrough, Melanie McGavran, Rebecca Menzel, Christine Pontarolo, Sabrina Sanowski, Craig Shannon, Joel Siderius and Asia Vue, all of Spokane; Kathleen Heffron, Tekoa, Wash.; Kari Mills, Rockford; and Tyler Jordan, Newman Lake.
