Disney Building Track

Compiled From Wire Services

Officials of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway blessed Disney’s entry into the lucrative world of Indy-car racing. In an official, ground-breaking ceremony, speedway executives provided bricks that will be used to build Disney’s track in Orlando, Fla.

The annual race, called The Indy 200 at Walt Disney World, is scheduled for January 1996 and will be the inaugural event of the Indy Racing League.

The league, which also will feature the Indy 500 and three other races, was established by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to preserve and promote Indycar racing on an oval track. The bulk of Indy-car races, organized by Championship Auto Racing Teams or CART, are held on road courses.

Driver Stan Fox was upgraded from fair to good condition, almost a month after seriously injuring his head during a first-lap crash in the Indianapolis 500.

Fox had a blood clot removed from his brain and was in a coma for five days after the May 28 crash.

A hospital spokeswoman said Fox is awake most of the day, completely off a respirator that had been used to help him breathe, and has smiled and begun mouthing words. He still has not spoken.
