Dellwo On Horse Board

He’s only a new, non-voting member of the Washington Horse Racing Commission, but Rep. Denny Dellwo, D-Spokane, said he wants to help insure that Playfair Race Course has a future.

Dellwo’s first commission meeting is Thursday in Yakima.

“As a non-voting member, my presence is more to influence by persuasion,” Dellwo said Tuesday.

It’s not too late to take steps to insure that Playfair comes through an abbreviated 1995 season, he said.

The racing industry “shouldn’t ignore the importance of a race track in Spokane,” Dellwo said.

Playfair is open through most of the summer as an off-track-betting outlet only for races out of Yakima Meadows. It won’t start on-site racing until Sept. 6.

Spokane horse people say the 50-day season here through Nov. 27 almost certainly will be shortened by late-November weather.

The commission is to identify problems and offer solutions designed to resolve the decline in parimutuel racing at Playfair.

Dellwo is one of four ex-officio members appointed by legislative leaders to serve two-year terms.

Golf

Led by Mark Rohde of Valley View, eight area golfers made the cut for today’s final round of the 54-hole Sunriver Oregon Open.

Rohde is at 3-under-par 141 (71-70) to stand second, five shots back of Jeff Coston of Blaine, Wash. (67-69). Dan Koesters, University of Idaho, (69-73) is in a three-way tie at 142.

Also making the cut: Clint Wallman, Birdies Golf Center, 144; Mark Gardner, Qualchan, 145; Steve Prugh, Manito, 148; amateur Jarred Jeffries, 148; Chris Mitchell, Sun Dance, 149; and Joe Trembly, Twin Lakes, 149.
