Camacho, Highsmith Come Away With Wins

Associated Press

Hector Camacho, hoping for a shot at a fourth title, bloodied his opponent’s face Tuesday night and stopped Juan Arroyo after the sixth round of their junior middleweight bout.

Alonzo Highsmith, a former University of Miami running back who spent six seasons with the Houston Oilers, ran his pro record to 4-0, surviving a second-round knockdown to stop Tampa heavyweight Sean Rickards in the third.

Camacho, 33, floored Arroyo in the fourth and opened a cut under his right eye. Arroyo failed to answer the bell for the seventh.

Camacho improved to 53-3 with his 25th knockout. Arroyo is 28-5.

“Everyone knew I was better than Arroyo, but I didn’t want to take any chances,” said Camacho.

Although a fourth title opportunity is in Camacho’s plans, his promoter Mike Acri said Camacho also would issue a challenge to five-time champion Ray Leonard, who hinted last week of a possible comeback.

“I know that Leonard’s first target is Marvin Hagler,” Acri said. “But if he doesn’t fight Hagler, Camacho will issue the challenge.”
