Boy Killed Digging Tunnel On Beach

A boy vacationing with his family suffocated when a tunnel he was digging at the beach caved in around him, authorities said.

Witnesses said Clinton Hoffman, 12, had been digging holes large enough to crawl into on the beach in front of a condominium complex here.

The Hagerstown boy was trying to dig a tunnel between the holes when the sand fell in on him.

Two boys tried to dig him out, but didn’t notify anyone of the accident for nearly an hour, police said.

Ocean City firefighters found the body Wednesday under about 5 feet of sand.
