Teachers Receive First Chemistry Master Degrees

Twenty-two Washington state high school chemistry teachers have received the first Master of Arts in Chemistry degrees awarded by Washington State University. The degree is designed specifically for teachers assigned to teach chemistry courses who have no earned degree in the subject.

Inland Northwest teachers receiving the degree were: Elizabeth Frank, Harrington High School; Keith Duncan, Kamiakin High School, Kennewick; Brian Soiseth, River View High School, Kennewick; Larry Pettyjohn, Columbia High School, Pasco; Diane Prince, Pomeroy (Wash.) High School; Steven Colvin, Christian Heritage School, Reardan, Wash.; Sandy Hazelbaker, Northwest Christian School, Spokane; and Michael Ottis, Wilson Creek School.

The following Inland Northwest students have graduated from Montana State University-Bozeman: Robert Wehrman, Benton City, Wash.; Tammi Pimley, Greenacres; Angus Bell, Kennewick; Eric Storlie, Thomas Clements and Matthew Folwell, all of Pullman; Clinton Morton, Brooke Cloninger, Jennifer Guilland, Nathan Johnson and Kerin Taylor, all of Spokane, and Ty Kelly, Mark Sims and Nicole Webb, all of Veradale.

The following student received awards from the Army or Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps at Central Washington University, Ellensburg:

Receiving Army ROTC awards: Michael Buchkoski, Walla Walla, National Sojourners Award, recent graduate majoring in accounting; Carlos Martinez, Walla Walla, Sons of the American Revolution, Cascade Centennial Chapter Award, recent graduate majoring in law and justice.

Receiving Air Force ROTC awards: William Beatty, Spokane, American Veterans of WWII, Korea and Vietnam Award, sophomore; Jennifer Caldwell, Omak, Wash., Daughters of Founders & Patriots of America, Sons of the American Revolution, Cascade Centennial Chapter Award, freshman; and John Sherman, Cheney, Air Force Association Award, recent graduate majoring in philosophy.

Spokane-based Music City was recognized for its outstanding service as a Baldwin dealer at the music industry’s largest trade show. The company earned the Outstanding Dealer Service Award by meeting stringent criteria, including properly preparing pianos for display, maintaining a courteous and professional sales staff, providing professional delivery and home set-up, assuring after-sale customer satisfaction, and efficiently handling service needs.

Dimitry Bistrensky, a first-grade student at Bemiss Elementary, won first place in the Spokane Quota International’s poster contest, and third place in the group’s national contest.
