Gonzalez Beats Sox With Clutch Base Hit

Alex Gonzalez won the game at the plate for the Toronto Blue Jays after saving it with his glove Monday night.

The rookie shortstop preserved a 3-3 tie with a spectacular catch in the 11th inning and then won it with a two-out, bases-loaded single in the 12th, giving the Blue Jays a 4-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox in Toronto.

“I feel like I’m getting hits in important situations and driving in runs. That’s the key to hitting,” Gonzalez said after lining a fast ball from Ken Ryan into the gap in right-center to bring home Joe Carter.

Juan Gonzalez hit his third homer in three games and Roger Pavlik won his fourth straight decision as Texas earned its sixth consecutive victory.
