Robby Gordon came back from a hard crash in practice to lead provisional qualifying for Sunday’s Detroit Grand Prix. Gordon got around the 2.1-mile, 14-turn Belle Isle road circuit in 69.795 seconds, translating to 108.318 mph. Gordon crashed about 50 minutes into the 90-minute opening practice.

Jeff Green won the pole position for today’s Carolina Pride-Red Dog 250 NASCAR Busch Grand National stock car race at Myrtle Beach, S.C. In a Chevrolet owned by seven-time NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt, Green turned the .538-mile track at a speed of 96.329 mph.

Ken Schrader produced a qualifying lap of 163.375 mph in a Chevrolet Monte Carlo at Long Pond, Pa., for Sunday’s UAW-GM Teamwork 500.

Michael Schumacher of Germany won the provisional pole for Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix. In a BenettonRenault, Schumacher covered the 2.75-mile Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 1 minute, 27.661 seconds on the sixth of his 11 qualifying laps, giving him the afternoon’s top speed of 112.795 mph.
