Four Local Students Receive Scholarships

The following area students won scholarships:

Courtney Wells, a graduate of Rogers High School, $1,000 scholarship from the Spokane Transportation Club. She plans to study dental assisting at Spokane Falls Community College.

Andrea Renford, a graduate of North Central High School, $1,000 scholarship from the Spokane Transportation Club. She plans to study pharmacy at Washington State University.

Heather Beese, a senior at West Valley High School, $8,000 scholarship from Pacific Gas Transmission Co.

Heather Wisor, Liberty High School, $500 scholarship from Pacific Gas Transmission Co.

Professor Thomas Maloney, has been appointed the first Distinguished Professor in Wood Materials and Engineering by Washington State University’s College of Engineering and Architecture. Maloney directs today’s lab and ran its forerunner since 1958. Through both labs he has attracted approximately $15 million in research and projects and helped revolutionize the composite materials used by today’s construction industry. He has been with WSU for 40 years.

Music compositions written for piano by Lisa Gonnella and Megan Meyer have received awards in the state Young Composers Project sponsored by the Washington State Music Teachers Association. Gonnella is a student a Mullan Road Elementary School and received an honorable mention in the primary division for her piece, “Ghostly Dreams.” Meyer is a student at Roosevelt Elementary School and received third place in the fourth-grade division for her piece, “Dancing in the Huckleberry Patch.”

Tim Roberts, Cat Country 94 KDRK Program Direction, was a finalist for the 1995 Gavin Country Awards in the medium market category. He was one of five finalists from program directors across the nation.

The Spokane Transit Authority recently gave recognition to its 253 employees who provide either maintenance or transportation services to the Spokane community. The group accumulated 1,894 employee-years of safe service.

Dr. Edmund Gray became the first recipient of the Warren Featherstone Reid Award for excellence in health care. Gov. Lowry presented the award, recognizing a lifetime of achievements in public and private health care.
