Get Out Of House And Into Art Through Summer Arts Program

The annual Summer Arts Program at the Spokane Art School, featuring a variety of two-hour workshops, will be from June 19 to Aug. 24.

The program is structured for kids, ages 4 through high school. Classes happen Monday through Thursday. There will be more elaborate, threehour workshops - such as sculpting, mask making and ceramics - on Fridays.

Adults can take evening classes in calligraphy, ceramics, doll making, figure drawing, traditional oil painting, photography and several others.

High school bands wanted

The Chase Youth Commission is accepting audition tapes from members of high school rock and garage bands for competition at this year’s Kid’s Week Battle of the Bands, Aug. 12 in Riverfront Park.

Submission deadline is June 30.

EWU Symphony wraps up

The Eastern Washington University Symphony Orchestra, directed by Kelly Farris, will play its final concert of the academic year at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Music Building Recital Hall on campus.

The orchestra will perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C-minor and Stravinsky’s Concerto for Orchestra in E-flat.

Tickets, available at the door, are $5 for general admission and $3 for seniors and non-EWU Students. EWU students with ID are admitted free.

The art of bike racing

Marianne McCoy, a former Spokane resident and Shadle Park High School graduate, has her photography and art work of cyclists on display at the Redhook Ale Brewery in Woodinville, Wash.

The exhibition is entitled “The Art of Velocity.” Through a variety of photo techniques and styles (computer-generated images, infrared black-and-white photos and hand-tinted prints), McCoy attempts to capture the excitement and essence of bike racing.

“The Art of Velocity” runs through the end of June.

Calling all bands

Pullman Parks and Recreation needs music groups to perform during this summer’s Concert in Reaney Park series, June 28 to Aug. 2.

It’s a paying gig.

Poetry contest

The Hollywood Famous Poets Society is sponsoring a contest for Spokane poets.

Local poets can submit their work for cash and prizes. The grand prize is $1,000.

Deadline for submissions is June 10.

Auditions

The Spokane Area Children’s Chorus will hold auditions for kids, ages 7 through 17, at Westminster Congregational Church on Mondays, June 5 and 12; and Wednesday, June 14.

Song preparation isn’t necessary.

Today is the last day to audition for the Summer Palace Theatre’s production of “The King and I.”

Auditions occur from 1:30-4 p.m. at Daggy Hall’s Jones Theatre on the Washington State University campus.

Those who try out must perform a brief dance number, read a short piece and sing a song.

Dance steps and readings will be furnished. Auditioners however, must prepare a short song of their choice.

The Summer Palace Youth Theatre will conduct auditions for actors of all ages for a production yet to be named on June 14 and 15 in Daggy Hall’s Wadleigh Little Theatre at WSU.
