University Grad Accorded National Wrestling Honors

Dusty Roberts, a University High School graduate, has been named to the 10th annual Asics Tiger High School All-America wrestling team.

Roberts, a 148-pounder, capped a brilliant career with an unbeaten state championship season in 1995. He also finished first as a sophomore and third as a junior.

He’s following his brother, two-time All-American Kevin Roberts, to the University of Oregon this fall.

Roberts was the only AllAmerican from Washington or Idaho. He was named to the second team behind T.J. Williams, a junior from Chicago.

Basketball

The Spokane Regional AAU is registering teams for the 1995-96 season. There are leagues for boys in grades four through nine and girls five through nine, which run Nov. 4 through the third Saturday in February.

There is also a high school intramural program, beginning Dec. 10.

Gymnastics

Stoyan Katzarski, a former Bulgarian Olympian, has been named to the coaching staff at Lilac City Gymnastics Center in Spokane.

Katzarski, who will be head men’s coach and assistant women’s coach at the center, E219 Augusta, trained at the Olympic and world-class levels in Bulgaria.

Miscellany

Eastern Washington University is accepting entries for the ninth annual Excell Foods Eagle Kickoff Classic to be held Aug. 3 at Liberty Lake Golf Course.

Cost is $125 per person, with proceeds funding athletic scholarships through the Eagle Athletic Association. Entry fee includes green fees, cart, lunch, dinner, beverages, EWU football tickets and two tickets for the EAA’s annual Lake Coeur d’Alene Cruise. The cruise will be Aug. 2, and can be attended separately for $10. Info: 359-2463.

The sixth annual Kootenai County Vandal Booster Kickoff Cruise on Lake Coeur d’Alene is set for Aug. 24. Boarding begins at 6:30 p.m. near the Coeur d’Alene Resort.

Washington State University graduate Scott Spencer has been hired as assistant director of athletic media relations by the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif.Spencer graduated from WSU in 1994, having spent four years as an undergraduate assistant.

Softball

Spokane Fastpitch went to the Amateur Softball Association of America Men’s C Fastpitch National qualifier at Redmond, Ore., July 22-23 and went 5-0 to reach the finals before a dust storm forced the suspension of the title game.

Outfielders Steve Allen and Bryan Smelcer, third baseman Mark Anderson and pitcher Dave Berghammer made the all-tournament team.

Track and field

Marcia Mecklenburg, an assistant track and field coach at Washington State, is serving as a manager for the women’s West Region team competing at the U.S. Olympic Festival in Denver.
