Ross, Huston Key 11-3 Victory

Christian Ross had a two-run double and Jeremy Huston a two-run single as Chapter Eleven/Longhorn took control in the first inning of an 11-3 victory over Olympic Sports in the American Legion baseball playoffs Thursday night at Al Jackson Field.

Olympic led 2-0 in the first.

Chapter Eleven/Longhorn plays Spokane Federal Credit Union tonight at 6, also at Jackson Field, in the first of a three-game series.

In Thursday night’s late game, Spokane Athletic Supply clipped Global Federal Credit Union 5-4 with a four-run sixth inning. A one-run double by R.J. Delmese turned out to be the game winner.

Basketball

Seafirst Select Hoopfest, a group of high school stars from Spokane, lost a 20-point halftime lead en route to a 63-60 loss to Menlo Park of San Francisco at the BCI Tournament in Las Vegas.

North Central’s Nate Holdren scored 14 points.

Seafirst slips to the consolation bracket as the No. 3 seed.

Also at the BCI tourney, South Coast (Calif.) beat Chewelah 74-59 for 1-2 seeding into the championship bracket.

Chris Boone of Chewelah High scored 13 points.

At the Las Vegas Prep National Grand Finale, the Utah All-Stars eliminated Seafirst Select 80-51 despite 13 points apiece from West Valley’s David Schillinger and Pasco’s Trent Ady.

It was the second loss of the day for Seafirst Select, which fell 62-49 to Oklahoma in the morning.

Golf

The Kamimura sisters, Kelli and Jennifer, continued to dominate girls’ play in the second round of the Washington State Junior Golf Association tournament at Tacoma.

Kelli, a Burlington-Edison High sophomore, added a stroke to her 15-17 division lead with a 4-over-par 79 at Fircrest Golf Club.

That gave her a 151 total, 4 over for 36 holes, and a 9-shot lead over Taya Battistella of Richland going into today’s final round.

Jennifer Kamimura, an eighth-grader, had an 82 at Fircrest for a 158 total. She has a 6-shot lead in the 12-14 division.

Hillary Prugh of Spokane followed Wednesday’s 83 with an 86.

Dustin Brett of Tacoma carded a 2-under 69 at Oakbrook G and CC for a 144 total to take the boys’ lead. Brett, a Bellarmine Prep senior, was 2 over par for 36 holes with 144.

Spokane golfers Kyle Kelly and Royal Stumph each followed opening 78s with 75s and are at 153.

Canadian Daniel Chartrand shot 2-under 70 for a one-stroke lead after the first round of qualifying for the 48th U.S. Amateur Championship, played on the 6,737-yard Farco (N.D.) Country Club course.

Spokane’s Andy Hastings shot 74.

Cristie Kerr of Miami closed with a 72 for a 206 total and eight-stroke win over Molly Cooper of Tumwater, Wash., at the McDonald’s Betsy Rawls Girls National Championship conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Du Pont CC in Wilmington, Del. Spokane’s Britney Holt shot 80-239.

Ann Swanson of Sandpoint defeated Lee Fesler of Rainier 3 and 2 to advance to the championship flight against Tacoma’s Lisa Newman in the Washington State Women’s Golf Association Championship at the Fairwood Golf and Country Club in Renton. Spokane’s Linda Farmin won her third-flight match, 1-up, while Suzi Stone, also of Spokane, fell 6 and 5 in the first flight.
