Paper Tells Writers On Strike To Return

Compiled From Wire Services

With both sides digging in on the 11th day of the strike at the city’s two daily newspapers, managers at the Detroit Free Press were asking journalists to come back or risk losing their jobs.

“You’re very important to the Free Press and we want you back as soon as possible,” said Friday’s letter from publisher Neal Shine and seven top editors. “But if the strike drags on, we will soon face the prospect of making more lasting arrangements. … Newsroom jobs could be at stake.”

The Guild’s response to the letter called it “another example of the union-busting efforts. … But we will not divided from our fellow unions.”
