Comic, Physician Shulman Preaches Benefits Of Humor

Joe Ehrbar Correspondent

On Wednesday, Dr. Neil Shulman (aka “Doc Hollywood”) will prescribe a couple hours of uncontrollable laughter and good cheer for patients, figuratively speaking, at the Providence Auditorium in Sacred Heart Medical Center.

Shulman, a comedian, physician and professor at Emory University Medical School, is author and associate producer of the film “Doc Hollywood,” which starred Michael J. Fox.

Wednesday, the jovial physician will speak on the comic aspects of practicing medicine.

The fun begins at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is $5, but space is limited. All proceeds benefit St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute. For more information, call 838-7274.

Carnival of Safety

There will be a Kids’ Carnival of Safety on Thursday at Valley Hospital and Medical Center, 12606 E. Mission.

During the day-long event, children can learn about various safety measures and have fun doing it.

Activities include cast wearing, bicycle safety, games of Musical Seat Belts and Wheel of Safety, first aid information, puppet shows, a bicycle rodeo and tours of ambulances and fire engines. Kids can practice making 911 calls and get fingerprinted and videotaped for identification purposes.

For more information, call 459-4991.

For women only

“In Control Again,” a two-part class for women with urinary incontinence, will be at 1 and 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday and the following Tuesday at Group Health Northwest’s Riverfront Medical Center, 322 W. North River Drive.

Mental health services meeting

Should Spokane County have multiple providers for publicly funded mental health services?

That’s the question the Spokane Mental Health Advisory Board will ask at a 4 p.m. public meeting on Thursday in the commissioners’ hearing room in the Public Works Building, 1026 W. Broadway.

Anyone involved with mental health - providers, consumers, family members - are especially invited to attend and provide testimony.

Two additional meetings will deal with this issue on Aug. 7 and 9.

For more information, call 456-5722, ext. 118.
