John Davis Wins Awards For High Math Score
John Davis, 11, won regional, state and national awards for his high mathematics score on the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) from John Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth at Gonzaga University.
Davis was one of 33,000 participants nationwide and among the 200 to receive an award. He also received a scholarship from GU for two semesters during the 1995-96 school year and an award by the Native American Parent Advisory Committee, putting him on the honor roll for Talent Youth.
He will be a freshman at West Valley High School in the fall.
His brother, Jack Davis, recently placed 31st in Special Olympics, earning him a trip to Fort Lewis, where he will compete again.
Linda Adams has been selected as Spokane School District 81’s Classified Staffer of the Year and Christine Lynch as its Certificated Staffer of the Year.
Adams is office manager at Finch Elementary, where she has worked the past two years. She began her career 10 years ago as a clerk at Longfellow Elementary before being promoted to assistant secretary.
Lynch has also been a district employee for 10 years, teaching English, reading and physical education. She has been a coach and program coordinator and is now assistant principal for student administration at North Central High School.
The Rev. Kirk Ruehl has been ordained in the Presbyterian church as a chaplain for the Seamons Church Institute of New York and New Jersey. Ruehl, son of Ben and Marge Ruehl, is a 1979 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School and Interlochen Arts Academy.
Juanito Operana Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Juanito Operana, Spokane, has been selected to perform with The Sound of America Honor Band and Chorus, a national performing group.
Operana has sung bass for the Lewis and Clark High School Choir the Eatern Washington University Honor Choir.
The honor band and chorus will travel to five countries during its 25-day concert tour.
Bernard Nelson, Spokane, has been nominated for the 1995 Governor’s Sustaining Leadership Award. He is regional administrator for Community Services Division, Region 1, at the Department of Social and Health Services. He has worked more than 30 years for Washington state and served as regional administrator since 1978.
Daryl Way has been named Washington State Sanitarian of the Year for 1995. He has worked in the environmental health profession for 25 years and is employed at Spokane County Health District.
Greg Fosse, a Spokane State Farm insurance agent, received the company’s Legion of Honor Award for excellence in business. To earn this award, an individual must write and maintain a high quality book of business.
Alexis Tan, director of the Murrow School of Communication at Washington State University, has been elected president-elect of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication for 1995-96. He will assume his new position on Oct. 1.
Tan has headed the WSU communication school since 1986.
