Report Of Bridge Jumper Is Hoax

A report of a man who jumped off the Maple Street Bridge on Wednesday night proved to be a hoax, police said.

Both the woman who made the report, Maria Christina Mashtare, 20, and the supposed victim, Edward T. Bolton, 24, were arrested for making a false report.

About 9:15 p.m., police received a call from a woman who gave her name as Maria Smith and said a man handed her a suicide note through a fence, then jumped from the bridge.

Police, firefighters, helicopters and rescue divers responded to the scene but ended the search after finding no sign of the man.

In a follow-up investigation, police found the woman at her home at 605 S. Ivory with the supposed victim. , DataTimes
