Hayden Lake Golfers Move To Quarterfinals

John Cook and Bob Christensen of Hayden Lake, Idaho, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Pacific Northwest Amateur golf tournament in West Linn, Ore., after match play Thursday.

During second-round match play, Cook defeated David Cochrane of Vancouver, British Columbia, 4 and 3 while Christensen topped Kevin Marsh of Goleta, Calif, 2-up.

In the third round, Cook topped Michael Hasibar of Portland 2 and 1 while Christensen eliminated Kyle Hudson of Corvallis, Ore., 4 and 3.

Jared Jeffries of Mead High and Seattle beat Cam Azari of Portland 4 and 2 in the second round, but lost to Birk Nelson of Pendleton, Ore., 2 and 1 in the third round.

Brandon Smith, 15, of Veradale shot a 1-under-par 70 for a one-stroke lead at the Pacific Northwest Section PGA Maxfli boys junior championship at Hidden Lakes Country Club in Sandpoint.

Dustin Brett of Tacoma shot an even-par 71, one better than Shaun Murray and Kyle Kelly of Spokane and Brent Roddy of Wenatchee. Defending champion Brian Nosler, of Lake Oswego, Ore., shot a 73.

Kelli Kamimura, 15, of Burlington, Wash., leads the girls division with a 2-over 73. Jamie Jou of Richland is two shots back.

Boys soccer

Jeremy VanVoorhis of Freeman High and Trever Booth of Lewis and Clark scored as the U-18 Eastern Washington Olympic Developmental Program team defeated Northern California 2-0 at the Western Region tournament in Albuquerque, N.M.

Booth scored on a penalty kick. Goalkeeper Brian Mullen of Gonzaga Prep registered the shutout.

Eastern Washington advances to the Saturday’s semifinals against British Columbia.

Spartak of Vladikavkaz, Russia, defeated the Spokane Breakers 2-0 at the USA Cup in Minneapolis, eliminating the U-14 team from the 128-team tournament.

The Breakers advanced to the field of 32 teams by defeating Eagan, Minn., 8-0 and Barrington, Ill., 4-1 on Wednesday.

Spartak averaged 12 goals in four matches before playing Spokane.

Boys tennis

Matthew Loucks, 11, of Veradale defeated second-seeded Jamil AlAgba of Bremerton, Wash., 6-3, 6-2 in the finals of the U-12 Washington State junior championships at Kirkland.

Loucks, the top seed, defeated Arpan Podduturi of Bellevue 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Loucks competes in a zonal tournament in Tucson, Ariz., next week.

Track and field

Bryan Rasmussen resigned as Coeur d’Alene High coach and is a candidate as assistant track coach at North Idaho College.
