Recipes Give Hot Tips On Frozen Meals

Rick Bonino Food Editor

When it comes to quick meals, Patti Anderson has it down cold.

Anderson, a Spokane native now living in Omaha, publishes a monthly newsletter called Frozen A$$et$ full of recipes that can be prepared and frozen in advance.

“People want to sit down and have dinner, have a family life, but the way we live these days it’s just go, go, go,” Anderson said during a recent visit here. “This kind of enables them to have the best of both worlds.”

A 1969 Rogers High School graduate, Anderson (nee Patton) has been freezing meals since she was a young bride in Spokane. “I thought everybody lived that way,” she said.

Along with the newsletter, in its third year, Anderson teaches community college classes and has a video coming out this fall. Her readers range from a teacher in West Germany to a colonel at the Pentagon.

Subscriptions are $12 a year. For a sample issue, send a stamped, selfaddressed, business-sized envelope to: Frozen A$$et$, Dept. S, 6005 N. 116th Plaza, Omaha, NE 68164-1429.

Formally, it’s the International Association of People who Dine Over the Kitchen Sink, with members running the culinary gamut from Julia Child to Dave Barry.

Some of their favorite recipes have been collected in “The Official Sinkies Don’t Cook Book,” including “a handful of mashed potatoes,” “tomato, mayo, white bread sandwich” and “chocolate cake in a glass of milk.”

The book costs $13.95, with a lifetime membership going for $5.89. Write to: Sinkies, 1579 Farmers Lane, No. 252, Santa Rosa, CA 95405.

Food safety specialists from Washington State University Cooperative Extension will demonstrate drying, canning and other preservation practices. Activities will be available to keep your kids busy. For information, call 533-2048.

Tuber steak

One omission in last week’s coverage of National Hot Dog Month: Idaho Republican Sen. Larry Craig’s favorite concoction is a “Super Tuber,” made by coring out the center of a potato, pushing a hot dog through it and baking it. Frankly, Larry …
