At Athens, Greece, Sarunas Marciulionis and Arvydas Sabonis carried Lithuania to an 80-70 victory over Croatia and a final showdown with Yugoslavia at the European Championship. Predrag Danilovic and Dejan Bodiroga led Yugoslavia to a 60-52 victory over Greece to reach today’s final. Lithuania can win its first title since regaining independence following the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.

The Ontario Hockey League champion Detroit Jr. Red Wings have changed their name to the Detroit Jr. Whalers and are headed to a new arena.

The decision came after Olympia Arenas Inc., which runs Joe Louis Arena, canceled its lease agreement with team owner Compuware Sports Corp.
