Carter Wins Women’s Indoor Pentathlon

Kym Carter won the USA National Indoor women’s pentathlon championship Friday night, scoring 4,696 points while setting an American record for the indoor pentathlon shot put (51 feet, 1 inch).

Carter finished in the top two in each event on the way to the championship. Carter won the high jump and shot put.

Jamie McNear finished second to Carter with a score of 4,403. McNear won two events, taking the long jump and setting a U.S. record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.40 seconds.

Moscow’s Dan O’Brien is leading in the men’s heptathlon with 3,646 points after four events. O’Brien, the world-record holder in the heptathlon (6,476 points), finished in a three-way tie for the lead after the first event, the 60-meter dash. In the long jump, he finished fourth with a jump of 24-9-3/4. He then finished second in the shot put with a throw of 50-9-1/2. The final event of the first day, the high jump, saw him clear 6-11-1/2 while finishing in a three-way tie for first in that event.

Saturday’s schedule will see the men begin with the 60-meter hurdles at 10:30 a.m. and then continue with the pole vault and 1,000-meter run.
