Ex-Financial Officer In St. Louis Sentenced

St. Louis’ former chief financial officer was sentenced to a year and a day in prison Friday for tax evasion.

Virvus Jones, 48, pleaded guilty in September to two felony counts of tax fraud for not reporting income in 1990 and 1991.

Prosecutors said the $118,000 came from his campaign fund and the bank account of a nephew for whom he was guardian.

“Here is a man who one year ago was comptroller of the city of St. Louis and one of the most powerful men in the city,” U.S. Attorney Edward L. Dowd Jr. said.

“Today, as a result of his pursuit of both greed and power, he is now penniless, powerless, a common felon who is going to prison.”
