Patricia Nypen Named Teacher Of The Month
Patricia Nypen, a fifth-grade teacher at South Pines Elementary, has been named Eastern Washington University’s Teacher of the Month for November.
She was nominated by student Mallary Maclay, who wrote that because she was a new student at South Pines last year, Mrs. Nypen paired her with a student who had been at the school for many years to help her feel at home. That other student is now Mallary’s best friend.
Nypen graduated from University High School, earned her bachelor of arts degree in 1988 and master of education degree in 1994 from EWU.
Jason Kindred, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Kindred, Spokane, was one of 40 students to receive a University of Idaho Alumni Association Award for Excellence. The students were nominated by UI department and faculty and were selected on basis of academic achievement and citizenship.
Three students at Rogers High School have achieved outstanding awards in music:
Chris Knight has become a member of the all-State Honor Jazz Band.
Karyl Sands has become a member of the all-State Honor Band.
Anne Courtney has become a member of the State Choir.
Alice Taylor, assistant director of development for Sister of Holy Names-Washington Province, was recently elected president of the Single Parent Outreach Connection.
Other newly elected officers are Sima Thorp, coordinator of volunteer services, vice president; Nancy Davis, a community volunteer, secretary; and Julie Rector, a sales associate with Watson Co. Inc., treasurer.

Dr. Elizabeth Keeler, a retired Department of Social and Health Services social worker and cofounder of S.P.O.C.; Patty McCorkle, an Eastern Washington University student; Mary Murphy, manager of Deaconess Regional Center for Child Abuse and Neglect; Sarah Miller, an Eastern Washington University student; Jim O’Connor, attorney; Dr. Jennifer Stucker, associate professor at Eastern Washington University; Becky Swan, director of housing research, Northwest Fair Housing Alliance; Agnes Warn, a retired school principal; and Sue Wright, an associate professor at Eastern Washington University.
Leif Egertson of Davenport, Wash., recently received a prize in the regional competition of the Inland Empire Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing.
Egertson, a tenor vocal student at the University of Idaho, placed first in Division IV. He is the son of Sharon Egertson.
Out of the 20 UI students participating, nine won prizes. They were among 110 singers from universities and private studios in Washington and North Idaho.
