Pump up those Chiefs
Someone needs to speak up about the importance of the local paper sports section supporting local athletic events.
As an avid hockey fan, I am disappointed “The Spokesman-Review” does not give proper credit, or coverage, to a Spokane Chiefs team that is 22-9-3, on a nine-game unbeaten streak and on Sunday (Dec. 17), played a game against the Kamloops Blazers that decided sole possession of first place in the Western Division of the WHL. The WHL West is arguably the toughest division in the league (by the way, we are 3-0 vs. the Blazers).
In coverage of the 8-6 victory over Swift Current (Dec. 16), which put the Chiefs into a first-place tie, half the story was missed by not highlighting the Sunday game with Kamloops and hyping it up a little bit. You consistently cover the games (thank you), but often you miss the story, or don’t do it justice. A newspaper has the ability to focus community attention. Why not focus it on something very positive? The Chiefs are playing in our new Arena and doing great this year. Let’s get behind them and support them. Please, for the sake of the Spokane community and hockey fans everywhere, help the Chiefs be a success and give them the coverage they have earned and deserve. Blaine French Spokane
Wyborney deserves nomination
I was pleased and elated to see Wilbur-Creston’s volleyball team, the Davenport football team and coach Skip Pauls nominated as finalist for the Greater Spokane Sports Association Junior Awards.
It is fitting and proper these teams and this individual be recognized for their athletic accomplishments this year. I appreciate the sportswriters’ consideration of BiCounty League teams.
However, I was deeply disappointed at not seeing the nomination of Wilbur-Creston volleyball coach Chuck Wyborney. For those who know Coach Wyborney, most would agree his name should be on the list.
He has taken his volleyball teams to 15 state tournaments in 19 years, winning the state crown three times, including the last two and is a member of the Washington State Volleyball Coaches Hall of Fame.
While I appreciate how tough it is for the committee of media members to make these selections from many deserving teams and individuals, I would ask in the future a more careful scrutiny be given the nominations. With his record, certainly Chuck Wyborney very much belongs on the nomination list. George W. Olsen Wilbur, WA
