Grace Your Tree With Gold

Those with decorating ambitions still have time to be creative before Christmas. It’s really not as difficult as it may seem. Northwest Fabrics & Crafts offers gold-mesh ornaments as an example.

You can make these ornaments, or variations on them, with a hot glue gun. The gold mesh balls are available at Northwest Fabrics. To make the ornaments, remove the tip of the ball and fill with potpourri. Glue a tassel on the bottom. Glue decorative items to the bottom and fill in with potpourri pieces, adding cherubs if desired. Tie a ribbon onto the top of the ornament hanger and create your own bow. (Hint: Be careful not to glue the top of the ball shut if you want to change the potpourri next year.)

In the Palouse: Those needing a last-minute gift might want to check out the Christmas Craft Sale at the Whitman Convalescent Center in Colfax Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The center is at 1150 Almota Road (adjacent to the hospital); admission is a can of food for the local food bank.

For free: Great tips for adding ‘90s-style casual elegance to everything you do at home are available in a free booklet from Vanity Fair napkins titled “Make the Everyday More Elegant.”

The booklet content was culled from winning entries in the Vanity Fair Everyday Elegance Contest. For a copy, send a self-addressed, stamped business-size envelope to: Vanity Fair Everyday Elegance Booklet, 625 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 2400, Chicago, IL 60611.

This just in: A recent wire service report serves up the dirt on who’s got good decorating taste and who doesn’t among the celebs. IKEA Home Furnishings surveyed 188 gossip columnists who have access to celebrity homes.

According to the dirt-dishers, Barbra Streisand has the best taste in home decorating, followed by Tom Selleck, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Anthony Quinn and Michael Jackson. At the “needs-some-help” end is Barbara Bush, followed by Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, Harry Blackwell, Ivana Trump, and Marla and Donald Trump.
