Sonics Lose Schrempf For At Least Six Weeks

Associated Press

NBA

Detlef Schrempf, the second-leading scorer on the Seattle SuperSonics, has a fractured left leg and will be sidelined six weeks.

The team said the All-Star forward has a non-displaced fracture of a bone just below his left knee. He underwent a CAT scan and MRI exam Monday while the team headed to Dallas.

Schrempf was injured with 1:12 left in the Sonics’ 106-97 home victory over Portland on Saturday night while setting a pick. Buck Williams ran into his leg.

He was originally diagnosed with a contusion of the knee.

Schrempf is averaging 18.7 points a game and shooting .523, including a team-leading 45 percent from 3-point range.

The Sonics (13-6) play at Dallas tonight and are at San Antonio on Wednesday night.

Tear sidelines Mourning

In Miami, Heat center Alonzo Mourning suffered a partial tear of a tendon in his left foot during a weekend victory over Phoenix and could miss up to three weeks with the team.

Mourning, the Heat’s 6-foot-10 center obtained in a trade with the Charlotte Hornets at the start of the season, underwent an MRI and results showed a partial tear of the peroneus longus tendon.

His left foot will be placed in a walking boot and physical therapy will start immediately
