Obituaries

Dorothy Salyer Kellogg

Service for Dorothy L. Salyer, 74, will be today at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Nazarene in Kellogg. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Salyer, a lifetime Idaho resident, died Tuesday.

She graduated from high school in Challis, Idaho, and came to the Kellogg area in 1962.

Mrs. Salyer worked as a bookkeeper at several Silver Valley businesses, including Hutton’s Department Store, Zanetti Bros. and the Silver Valley Medical Arts Center.

She enjoyed her family and friends and traveling. She was a member of the Senior Citizens Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James. Survivors include two daughters, Patsy Furnish of Spokane and Betty Horn of Challis; two brothers, Don O’Neal of Idaho and Boise O’Neal of Montana; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Oneita Cooper Sandpoint

Memorial service for Oneita Jo Cooper, 66, will be today at 1 p.m. at Coffelt’s Moon Chapel in Sandpoint.

Mrs. Cooper, who was born in Colorado, died Wednesday.

She moved to the Sandpoint area in 1933 and graduated from Sandpoint High School. She married Simm Cooper later the same year.

She worked most of her life as a medical receptionist and was recently a clerk at Family Time Video in Sandpoint.

Mrs. Cooper enjoyed traveling, carpentry and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include a daughter, Sally Cloud of Sandpoint; a sister, Wanoka Housekeeper of Sandpoint; and two grandsons.

Eleanor Larson Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Eleanor Anne Larson, 80, will be today at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Coeur d’Alene. Interment will follow at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. Yates Funeral Home of Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Larson, a longtime North Idaho resident, died Nov. 20.

She was born in Coeur d’Alene and graduated from high school in St. Maries. She also graduated from Kinman Business University in Spokane and then went to work for Benewah County.

She married Evert Larson in 1941 and after World War II, they moved to Coeur d’Alene. He died in 1963.

Mrs. Larson later developed a career as service officer for the Kootenai County Veterans Assistance Office before retiring in 1981.

She enjoyed sewing, reading, bridge club and playing the piano.

Survivors include two sons, William Larson of San Diego and James Larson of Otis Orchards; one brother, Matt Moshinsky of St. Maries; and seven grandchildren.

Madeline Kleweno Tacoma

Service for Madeline Clara Hermann Kleweno, 85, was Wednesday in Tacoma. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Tacoma.

Mrs. Kleweno, a former Eastern Washington resident, died Sunday.

She was born in Genesee, Idaho, and graduated from Genesee High School.

In 1929 she married Arthur Kleweno and they lived in Genesee until 1940 when they moved to Latah. In 1964 they moved to California. She had spent the past eight years in Tacoma.

Her husband died in 1988, and she continued to manage a 65-unit apartment complex in Tacoma. She retired two years ago.

Mrs. Kleweno was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. While in the Spokane area, she and her husband were active in the formation of the Immaculate Heart Retreat House.

She is survived by three daughters, Margie Raymond of Spokane, and Dorothy Betzendorfer-Jackl and Gail Ann Rito, both of Tacoma; one brother, Clifford Hermann of Genesee; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Cliff Houser Post Falls

Memorial service for Cliff W. Houser, 83, will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Post Falls Eagles Lodge, 209 E. Railroad Ave. English Funeral Chapel of Post Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Houser, who was born in Iowa, died Dec. 2.

He grew up in North Dakota and worked in coal mines before joining the Navy. Later he moved to Yakima and owned a sand and gravel trucking business.

Mr. Houser moved to the Coeur d’Alene area 25 years ago and eventually settled in Post Falls.

He had been married to Georgia Weedon and Nellie Piscar. They preceded him in death. He married Katherine May in 1982.

He was a member of the Yakima Eagles and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Donald of Coeur d’Alene and Larry of Nebraska; one daughter, Lynus Bauerfiend of Ketchikan, Alaska; and two stepdaughters, Tami Martin of Post Falls and Louise Slinkard of Valleyford.

Louis Soss Spokane

Graveside service for Louis J. Soss, 91, was Monday at the Mount Nebo Cemetery.

Mr. Soss, who died Sunday, was born in Brooklyn, New York. He was an optometrist and moved to Spokane in 1905.

He graduated from the UCLA School of Optometry.

For 35 years he operated an optometric practice in the Soss Block, owned by his father, Mark Soss.

Mr. Soss was a member of Temple Beth Shalom, B’nai Brith and the Spokane Elks Lodge. His wife, Gladys (Rudston) Soss, died in 1992.

Mr. Soss is survived by two sons, Michael “Mick” and Robert Soss, both of Spokane; one sister, Frances Rose of Spokane; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Leslie Belden Spokane

No service will be held for Leslie M. Belden, 75, at his request. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Belden, a 70-year Spokane resident, died Sunday.

He was born in Stuttgart, Ark.

He was a member of the Woodworkers Union and worked in commercial cabinet shops.

Mr. Belden was a World War II Army veteran and was a member of Altman-Ruoff Chapter No. 6, Disabled American Veterans.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred Belden; two daughters, Sharon Carte of Eugene, Ore., and Janice Welton of Mayville, Wis.; three grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

Cara-Rose Matthews Spokane

Memorial service for Cara-Rose Anna Matthews, 38, will be at 1 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North.

Miss Matthews died Tuesday due to complications from asthma.

She was born in Honolulu.

She graduated from Rogers High School in 1975 and from Spokane Community College in the respiratory therapy program.

She graduated from the University of Kansas School of Nursing in 1983 and worked as a critical care registered nurse at the University of Kansas Medical Center. In 1984 she became an instructor and coordinator of the critical care residency program for respiratory therapy at the medical center.

She returned to Spokane in 1994 after she became ill.

She was a member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, National Nurses Association and the American Association for Respiratory Care.

She is survived by her mother, Shirley Matthews of Spokane; one sister, Julie-Jeannine Matthews of Boise; three brothers, Michael Matthews of Colbert, and Matthew and Patrick Matthews, both of Spokane; and her grandmother, Minnie Moyer of Shelton, Wash.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.
