College Basketball Tonight

Idaho at Southern Utah

The 3-1 Vandals and Southern Utah (1-3) meet for a non-conference game at 6:30 PST at The Centrum in Cedar City.

At a glance: The last three UI teams 1993-94 (18-10 record), 1991-92 (18-14) and 1988-89 (25-6) - lost in Cedar City.

Idaho’s assignment will be to defend three Thunderbirds. Guards Reggie Ingram and Daryl Christopher and sweet-shooting forward Jon Gaines combine on average for 48 of Southern Utah’s 71 points. Gaines is shooting 68 percent on 3-pointers, but he’s mysteriously just third on the team in field goals attempted. SU is connecting on only 40 percent from the field, including Christopher’s 36 and Ingrams’ 30. Idaho stomped SU 86-72 last year in Moscow and T-Birds coach Bill Evans recalled, “Idaho’s front line was trouble for us.” Add to that JC transfer Jason Jackman, who is averaging 12.8 points. “I think we’ll be able to guard,” UI coach Joe Cravens said. “We’ve really yet to have any flow or shoot the ball extremely well.”

Idaho: Shawn Dirden, 16.8 ppg; Reggie Rose, 14 ppg, 4 apg; Harry Harrison, 17 ppg, 14 rpg. Southern Utah: Gaines, 19.5 ppg; Christopher, 16.3 ppg; Don Faux, 7 rpg.

Radio: KVNI (1080 AM) Coeur d’Alene; KRPL (1400 AM) Moscow, and other stations on the Vandal network.

Gonzaga at Cal State Fullerton

Gonzaga (2-2) travels to Cal State Fullerton to take on the 1-2 Titans in a 7 p.m. non-conference contest.

At a glance: These two teams have never met, although the Titans have faced all the other West Coast Conference clubs. Tonight marks the first home game for the Titans, who have lost to UCLA (79-63) and Northridge (77-76) and defeated San Diego State (85-83). The Titans have an extremely small lineup, with starting forwards listed at 6-7, 6-5 and 6-0. Guard Chuck Overton came up with 19 points against UCLA, while forward John Williams pumped in 25 in the win over San Diego State. The Bulldogs suffered from poor offensive execution in Thursday’s 58-56 loss at Montana State. They made only 37 percent of their shots from the field and 62 percent from the free-throw line. Once again, though, center Scott Snider was a workhorse, pulling down a career-high 13 rebounds and scoring 11 points.

Gonzaga: Paul Rogers, 16.0 ppg; Scott Snider and Rogers, 8.0 rpg; Kyle Dixon, 6.0 apg. Fullerton: John Williams, 16.3 ppg; Williams, 8.0 rpg; Ali Nayab, 4.2 apg.

Radio: KJRB (790 AM) with Dick Wright 15 minutes before tip-off.

EWU at University of California-Irvine

Eastern Washington (0-5) of the Big Sky Conference heads south for a game against UC Irvine (2-1) of the Big West Conference. Tipoff is at noon.

At a glance: Raimond Miglinieks (17.7), Brian Keefe (17) and Kevin Simmons (14) account for 64 percent of the Irvine offense. A Brooklynite, the 6-9 Simmons returned to New York last week for the Joe Lapchick Memorial Tournament, where the Anteaters beat Siena in the opening round and surprised host St. John’s 83-77 in the title game. Irvine hasn’t played since last Saturday, when the Anteaters fell 64-57 at Oregon State. EWU, meanwhile, plays its second game in three nights, having committed 19 turnovers in an 87-72 home loss to Portland on Thursday. EWU off-guards Curtis Porter (21 points) and D’mitri Rideout (20) provided the offense against Portland, but the Eagles struggled against the Pilots’ full-court pressure and were mostly ineffective in the low post. … Five Eagles average at least 3.8 rebounds per game.

EWU: Porter, 14.0 ppg, 4.8 rpg; Rideout, 13.3 ppg; Luke Egan and Brett Thompson, 2.0 apg. UC Irvine: Raimond Miglinieks, 17.7 ppg, 7.3 apg; Michael Tate, 7.3 rpg.

Radio: KSBN (1230 AM) in Spokane.
