Montana Speed Limit Now Unlimited

Compiled From Wire Services

The 55 mph daytime speed limit in Montana faded into history today, as did the state’s infamous $5 speeding tickets. But a new poll shows a majority of Montanans want speed restrictions.

At half an hour before sunrise on this morning, Montana no longer had a specified daytime speed limit for passenger vehicles. Drivers now are subject to the “basic rule,” which requires them to drive in a careful and prudent manner.

But a poll conducted at Montana State University-Billings and released Thursday said most Montanans think there should be speed limits.

The MSU-Billings Poll of 408 Montanans found 60 percent favored a speed limit on interstates. Those favoring a limit supported a mean speed limit of 68.5 mph. And 71.8 percent of those polled supported a speed limit on other highways, with those in favor supporting a mean speed limit of 61.8 mph.
