Sacramento St. Holds Off Idaho; Huskies Win 1st

Erin Enders hit two free throws with 11 seconds left as the Sacramento State Hornets defeated the Idaho Vandals 69-68 in women’s college basketball Sunday afternoon in the California capital city.

Idaho was led by guard Ari Skorpik’s 14 points. Mindy Rice added 10 points and nine rebounds before fouling out. Sacramento State was led by forward Sarah Stapp with 19 points and Mary Ann Bowman with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Vandals (1-2) suffered from foul trouble all afternoon. Rice played just 22 minutes before fouling out and backup point guard Jill Ortner fouled out in just 25 minutes of action. Idaho was whistled for 26 fouls and shot only nine free throws. Sacramento State (2-3) was called for 18 fouls and shot 35 free throws, making 27.

After Enders hit her two free throws to give the Hornets a 69-66 lead, Idaho’s Kelli Johnson made a layup with 4 seconds left. The Vandals fouled Stapp on the inbounds play with 3 seconds left, she missed the free throw and Jennifer Stone got the rebound for Idaho, but the Vandals were unable to get off a shot before the buzzer.

The Vandals got off to a hot start, leading 15-8 with 13:32 left in the first half. The Hornets outscored the Vandals 26-11 the rest of the half to grab a 34-26 halftime advantage. Idaho never led in the second half and trailed by 10, 54-44, with 9:20 remaining before rallying to get close.

Idaho will return to action Friday when it plays Cal State Northride in the first round of the Best Western Invitational in Moscow.

The Huskies (1-4) won their first game of the year, beating Alabama-Birmingham at the Kona Classic in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

The Huskies jumped to leads of 12-4, 18-6 and 24-10 in building a 44-29 halftime lead.
