Portland Goalie Falls Asleep, Costs Pilots National Title
Notre Dame saw its moment, and seized it. Notre Dame completed its startling rise to the top of women’s soccer Sunday, downing previously undefeated Portland 1-0 in sudden-death overtime in the NCAA championship game in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Cindy Daws’ free kick in the 126th minute.
It was Notre Dame’s third straight win over Portland (20-1-2), including 1-0 over the Pilots in last year’s semifinals.
Despite a total of 37 shots taken, both teams went scoreless through 90 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of regular overtime.
With 9:29 left in sudden death overtime, Irish midfielder Cindy Daws caught Portland goalkeeper Erin Fahey off guard, knocking a free kick from 25 yards out past her into the right corner. Fahey was at the left post still trying to set up a wall of defenders.
Kimberly Stiles from Mead is a midfielder for the Pilots.
Edmundo Alves de Souza, a star forward for Brazil’s national team and Flamengo, admitted he was driving a jeep involved in a deadly crash that killed three people in Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
Edmundo, 24, denied reports he had been drinking before the accident, which happened at 3 a.m. Sunday. He said he had been with his friends in a nightclub, but that he did not drink.
