Late Dallas Goal Beats Avalanche

Associated Press

NHL

It didn’t take a perfect game to beat Colorado in its own building, just an impossible one.

The Dallas Stars got two goals from former Spokane Chief Brent Gilchrist, two short-handed goals, a second goal in two nights from Shane Churla, and, finally, a wraparound goal by Kevin Hatcher with less than 4 minutes to play to beat the Avalanche 7-6 Sunday night.

The defeat was Colorado’s first in McNichols Arena after going 8-0-2 in its first 10 home games. In picking up the win, Dallas raised its record to 9-7-6.

In the final period, Grant Ledyard put Dallas ahead 5-4 with a slap shot from the right point at 0:42. But Stephane Yelle beat Dallas goalie Darcy Wakaluk, another former Spokane Chief, to a loose puck in front of the net at 8:10 to make it a 5-5 game.

Andrei Kovalenko’s second goal put Colorado on top 6-5, but Greg Adams answered at 12:58 to tie it 6-6.

Then Millen fed Hatcher for his game-winner at the 16:08 mark.
