Boston College Cornerback Won’t Play At Being Football Draft’s Mr. Irrelevant

Associated Press

Mike Reed didn’t feel irrelevant. He felt ignored.

So when he became the NFL’s Mr. Irrelevant as the final draft selection Sunday, he was eager to shed the title.

“I don’t care about the vacation or parties in California,” said Reed, a 5-foot-9, 177-pound cornerback from Boston College. “I think I should have gone higher.”

Reed, a speedy defensive back with solid coverage skills, had turned off the draft after the fourth round and talked about his freeagent chances.

Reed will go to Newport Beach, Calif., in June for a week of festivities honoring his selection at the 249th and last player taken.

But Reed hopes to follow the recent examples of very relevant last picks like Matt Elliott in 1992 and Marty Moore last year. Elliott, now a Panthers offensive lineman, stuck with Washington, while Moore, a linebacker with Kentucky, made the New England Patriots last year.

Brigham Young University offensive guard Tim Hanshaw, a 1988 West Valley High School graduate, was picked in the fourth round - 127th overall - by the San Francisco 49ers.

It was the 49ers’ second choice of the draft.
