As many as 900 of the great beasts belonging to a Palouse chief were slaughtered on the banks of the Spokane River, near what is now the border between Washington and Idaho, on the orders of Col. George Wright.

A 27-year-old Seattle man was killed Sunday after his motorcycle crashed during an event at Spokane County Raceway, officials confirmed Tuesday. The Spokane Medical Examiner identified the man as Khalil Mohmed, who died as a result of a skull fracture from a blunt impact to the head.

Even with the windows cracked, the temperature of the leather seat inside the Mercedes-Benz parked in the Value Village parking lot on East Sprague on Saturday afternoon climbed to more than 140 degrees. Down on the floor, where Olive, a Yorkshire terrier, was huddled beneath the foot pedals, an infrared gun gauged the temperature at a cooler 109 degrees.

At a standing-room-only memorial service at Opportunity Presbyterian Church in Spokane Valley, uniformed members of the U.S. Marine Corps, including a commanding officer and first sergeant, presented the 23-year-old corporal’s family with a Purple Heart for Dumaw’s service in Afghanistan.

Valley Marine dies in Afghan IED blast

A 23-year-old Marine from Spokane Valley was killed this week while supporting combat operations in Afghanistan. Cpl. Joshua R. Dumaw, assigned to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, II Marine Expeditionary Force, was killed Tuesday during operations in the Nimruz province, the Department of Defense said in a news release.
