After qualifying for state last season, the Rogers boys basketball team admitted to being a little frustrated with their trip through the Greater Spokane League this season, going 4-8 and landing the fourth seed to the District 6 tournament.

Carter Nilson led four players in double figures with 17 points and top-seeded Gonzaga Prep beat fourth-seeded Chiawana 67-51 in a District 6 4A semifinal on Saturday at G-Prep.

The Greater Spokane League and Mid-Columbia Conference trade which league’s top team receives the top seed to the district tournaments every season, which is why the undefeated Central Valley girls team, ranked No. 1 in 3A in the state’s RPI, is the second seed this season to six-loss, No. 22-ranked Kennewick.

KENNEWICK – Brayden Crampton’s deflection goal tied the game with 49 seconds left but the Spokane Chiefs fell to the Tri-City Americans 5-4 after a shootout in a Western Hockey League game at Toyota Center on Friday.

Things got off to an inauspicious start for the Mead boys basketball team on Friday. Delayed a day to play their first postseason game due to the weather, the Panthers found themselves in a huge hole after a scorching start by their visitors from Kamiakin.

The Gonzaga Prep boys team is no stranger to lofty rankings – or expectations. A nearly perennial contender under coach Matty McIntyre, the Bullpups came into the District 6 tournament as the top seed and the No. 1-rated team in 4A, according to the state’s RPI system.

After losing Saturday in overtime, the Spokane Chiefs wanted to bounce back with a good effort playing a rare Tuesday night game at home. The Wenatchee Wild – currently outside the Western Hockey League playoff picture – gave the Chiefs more resistance than they might have expected – or wanted.
