A Gonzaga University ROTC graduate deployed to Afghanistan died after the helicopter he was in took on enemy fire and crashed Wednesday. Professors with Gonzaga’s ROTC program said Friday that 1st Lt. Mathew G. Fazzari, a 2010 graduate, showed a knack for leadership during his time at the university.

Sam M. Huppin, who helped transform his family’s men’s clothing store and pawn shop in downtown Spokane into a major electronics retailer, died of natural causes Friday. He was 85. With an aeronautic engineering degree from Washington State University in hand and a keen interest in all things electrical, Huppin joined the business in the early 1950s and began tinkering with the radios and cameras that were in pawn and selling them, his son, Murray Huppin, said Saturday.
