Oddities, Rarities and Treasures

The University Archives and Special Collections at the Foley Center Library at Gonzaga University has a new exhibit called "Oddities, Rarities and Treasures from the Foley Vault." Some of the collectibles come from Asia and some are hundreds of years old.

A 1949 photo of Gonzaga boxing legend Carl Maxey and his coach, Joey August, is on display with Maxey’s 1950 boxing shoes. Maxey was a law student and went undefeated in college for two years. His record was a perfect 32-0. In 1950, Maxey and his Gonzaga teammates won the school’s first NCAA title by co-winning the National Collegiate Boxing championship. Maxey was graduated from law school in 1951 and became Spokane’s first prominent African-American attorney.
