The Morton-White Pass Timberwolves never made a false step during their two-year quest. The Timberwolves capped their journey Saturday night as Zach Walton scored 16 of his 34 points in the first quarter during a 72-57 victory over the Liberty Lancers in the State 2B boys title game at the Arena.

Lummi Nation earns first trip to State final with victory over Seattle Lutheran

Lummi Nation High has been in Spokane at the State B tournament six times prior to this year. In the six previous visits, all in what is now known as the 2B ranks, the Blackhawks’ best finish has been sixth. But after Friday night’s 66-47 rout of Seattle Lutheran, they will play for their first State 1B basketball title. And that means something.

Colton continues to add to its legacy. The Wildcats qualified for their eighth straight girls State 1B championship game and are seeking their seventh straight title after winning their 70th straight game with a 69-23 rout of Neah Bay on Friday at the Arena. Next up is Sunnyside Christian, 71-59 winner over previously unbeaten Republic at 3 p.m. today.

The White Swan Cougars had upset on their minds Friday night at the Arena. But they didn’t pay enough mind to Okanogan center Jill Townsend, who turned in her second straight dominating performance to carry the Bulldogs into the championship game of the State 2B girls tournament with a 43-33 win over the Cougars.

Unbeaten Republic opens 1B Tournament with resounding win over Evergreen Lutheran

Evergreen Lutheran received an early morning wake-up call by Republic in the 9 a.m. opener of the State 1B girls basketball tournament Thursday at the Spokane Arena. Six minutes into the contest the Eagles (17-9) trailed 21-1 and things didn’t improve as the Tigers cruised to a 64-34 triumph and a date at 3:45 this afternoon against Sunnyside Christian, whose 75-44 pasting of Crosspoint Academy that followed mirrored Republic’s romp.

Big plays propel Liberty past Life Christian Academy

Liberty, faced with technical difficulties, managed to clear everything up just in time on Thursday afternoon. Big plays by Chase Burnham and Kyle King, and the inside presence of 6-foot-5 Clay Fleming and 6-8 Match Burnham, who combined for 36 points, allowed the Lancers (25-2) to hold back Life Christian Academy 56-51 in a State 2B boys quarterfinal at the Arena.

For sure, the Colfax Bulldogs had a decent shot at defending their state girls 2B title. But the shots wouldn’t fall, costing the Bulldogs dearly in a 39-37 quarterfinal loss to White Swan on Thursday afternoon at the Arena.

State 2B boys: Clay Fleming gave Lancers final crucial piece

Liberty coach Mike Thacker came to Spangle 5 years ago and immediately started teaching young basketball players his offensive and defensive systems. Those young players aged and entered the high school program knowing all the broad concepts that Thacker wanted to employ. But the Lancers were missing that final piece that could turn a good team into one that could dominate.
