State 3A girls: Mead edged by Garfield in championship game; ‘Gardner vs. Fiso’ a battle for the ages

They say good things come to those who wait. But senior Teryn Gardner and her top-seeded Mead teammates were tired of waiting.

What happened: Katie Fiso scored 29 points including a pair of 3-pointers with less than 2 minutes to go and the sixth-seeded Bulldogs (21-3) edged the top-seeded Panthers (26-2) in the State 3A championship game at Tacoma Dome on Saturday. It was Garfield's fourth consecutive state title. Teryn Gardner led Mead with 22 points and seven rebounds.

What happened: Gracie Wenkheimer scored 15 points, Teryn Gardner added 13 and the top-seeded Panthers (26-1) beat third-seeded Snohomish (19-7) in a State 3A semifinal at Tacoma Dome on Friday. Mead will play in the state title game on Saturday at 9 p.m.
