Summary

Jack Smith had the big RBI single and Mercer Island held on for a 3-1 victory over Mt. Spokane at Whitworth's Merkel Field in the State 3A quarterfinals on Saturday.

The Islanders jumped in front by playing small ball to drive Anthony Scalzo home with a sac fly in the first. In the second, Mercer Island added a run on a balk before Smith's RBI pushed the Islanders to a 3-0 lead.

Matt Pulliam had two hits, one a double, for the Wildcats, whose season came to an end.
