Mabton's tiny but fearless Vikings refused to back down in the face of a taller Northwest Christian squad, stunning the third-ranked Crusaders 63-55 in the 2B Regional round at Sunnyside High School.

NWC finishes the season 23-3, just missing a chance for a third straight state tournament appearance.

Mabton hit five 3-point shots in the final period including an NBA distance bomb from Cassidy McCallum with 3:532 left that put the brakes on a six-point Crusader surge that closed NWC's deficit to 47-46.

With Mabton clinging to a two-point lead with just under 1:30 remaining, Soila Zaragoza drilled two straight 3-pointers, the second from deep in the left corner to give Mabton a 58-50 cushion.

After a sloppy first half NWC had finally established an inside presence in the third period behind Courtney Gray. Gray, who had 11 of her 15 points in the second half, hit two straight lay-ins off wing feeds. Mackenzi Gray, who led NWC with 18 points, followed that with a 16-foot jumper from the left baseline and NWC was within one.

But, in a portent of things to come, Mabton's Irene Pineda hit a 3-pointer from deep on the right wing. NWC trailed by three heading into the final period before Mabton's barrage.
