Summary

Morton-White Pass withstood St. George's furious rally late and stunned the Dragons 54-51 in the State 2B boys title game at the Arena.

Timberwolves' senior Kalen Dunlap, despite a reduced role brought on by foul trouble, scored 19 points and Kaleb Poquette and Zach Walton each added 11.

The Dragons, undefeated in the regular season and favorites to repeat as state champions, struggled offensively for most of the game.

Morton-White Pass gained an advantage early with a quick 8-0 run late in the first quarter. Dunlap hit back-to-back 3-pointers, the second coming five feet beyond the arc, and Zach Counts made a lay-in to give the Timberwolves a 16-6 lead with 2 minutes left in the first quarter.

Dunlap scored 14 points in the first half and Morton-White Pass led 35-23 at halftime.

The pace slowed in the second half and St. George's narrowed the gap.

With 1:10 left in the game, St. George's Dexter Sienko hit a shot near the basket to cut the Timberwolves' lead to one point. But Dragons' senior Erik Muelheims missed two 3-pointers in the final 10 seconds that would have tied the game.

Sienko scored 16 of his game-high 25 points in the second half. Morton-White Pass bottled him up in the first half, sending double teams as soon as he received the entry pass in the post. Muelheims added 13 points, but made just 4 of 15 shots from the floor.

St. George's beat Morton-White Pass 73-69 in the first round of last year's state tournament.
