
Lumberjack Nationals BMX races
BMX riders from around the western states spent the weekend of August 27-29 at the BMX track at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex in northwest Spokane competing for points and trophies under the auspices of USA BMX.

Racers in the 13- and 14-year-old girls’ “cruiser” category experience a sudden pile-up in the first turn of the their final race Sunday, Aug. 29, 2021 at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex BMX track in North Spokane. The crash started with Kinzie “Wild Child” Palmer, lower left, going down, then Madison “Maditude” Eveland, upper left, flying over her before others crashed into them. There were no serious injuries. Audrey “Chicken Nugget” Denton, at right, of Spokane won the race. The three-day Lumberjack Nationals drew hundreds of riders over the weekend to the Spokane BMX track to race for points and trophies under the auspices of USA BMX.

Kira Boustead, center, of Vallejo, Califonira, speeds through the second banked turn on the heels of Jacy Moore, right, of Port Orchard, Washington in the 15- and 16-year-old expert category race Sunday, Aug. 29, 2021 at the BMX track at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex in Spokane, Washington. Moments later, when it looked like Moore had the race well in hand, she crashed one the final straightaway and Boustead was able to slip past her for the win. The Lumberjack Nationals, which drew hundreds of riders from around the western states for three days of racing in categories from novice to expert and from ages three to over 70 years old, was brought to Spokane by the organization USA BMX.
