Grace Ayer, 15, right, extinguishes one of several candles during the Good Friday service at Spokane Valley Church of the Nazarene Friday, April 2, 2021. Watching at left is Lanet Herring. The extinguishing of candles during scripture reading is part of a "tenebrae" service, which is common on Good Friday in both Catholic and Protestant churches. Tenebrae means darkness and putting out candles during the reading of Easter passages from the Bible symbolizes the impending death of Christ in the readings. Though church attendance is more relaxed than last Easter, most churches are still practicing social distancing, masking and livestreaming services to those who can't make it.
