Five years after a wildfire, the scars on Ruth Smith’s land remain. Smith lost about 160 acres of forest in the Fish Lake Fire of 2015, which was caused by a BNSF train. Her husband died about a year after the fire trying to restore the land. BNSF paid her and her son about $425k in a federal court settlement at the end of May.
