Then and Now: Havermale Island
Havermale Island, in the middle of the Spokane River, makes up much of the area of today’s Riverfront Park. For early settlers, it was an important site and refuge.

1971 - Just a few years before Expo ’74, Havermale Island is poised to change dramatically. The Travelodge motel on the lower right, and the large parking lots will have to go away for the transformation. Perhaps the largest change will be a tunnel over Washington Street and the mound of earth that will cover it so that visitors won’t have to cross a street as they walk the island.

2018 - The first white settler to live on Havermale Island was probably Samuel G. Havermale, who moved his family to Spokane in 1875. The island was recontoured and transformed into a park for Expo ’74. After more than 40 years as city park, it’s undergoing it’s next makeover as the city remodels and retools its use.
