McKinley School redevelopment
Rob Brewster is working on a commercial redevelopment of McKinley School following its purchase by investors last summer. He plans a brewery and other commercial and office uses. The McKinley School, named after the assassinated president William McKinley Jr., opened in 1903 and was quickly expanded to more than twice it's original size, anticipating the growing neighborhoods of East Spokane. The school served elementary and junior high students and for a short time, was an alternative school offering vocational training to junior high boys.

Numerous Chimneys on the closed McKinley School show that in 1901 the builders didn’t go in for central heating. Plant department crews covered the windows with plywood to protect them against vandalism.
