An older home on the corner of Second Avenue and Chestnut in Browne's Addition has been demolished and will be replaced by a 15-unit apartment building. Neighbors are not pleased and are looking into forming a historic district to have some control on the appearance of new buildings in one of Spokane's oldest neighborhoods.

After an old home was demolished to be replaced by a 15-unit apartment building, neighbors are looking into forming a historic district to have some control on the appearance of new buildings in one of Spokane's oldest neighborhoods. Although there are many apartment buidlings, both old and new, large and small, in Browne's Addition, but neighbors feel that some newer buildings can ruin the historic appearance of the neighborhood.

In this 1969 file photo, finishing touches are being completed on one of the largest apartment houses completed here. It is the Aqua View apartmetns at W 2136 Riverside in Browne's Addition, built for Guthrie Investments as a rent subsidy project for low-income elderly persons. The 130-unit, $1.5 million building has 30 efficiency apartments, 90 one-bedroom apartments and 10 two-bedroom apartments, all with built-in cooking ranges and refrigerators.

In this 1967 file photo, this 10-unit brick apartment house at W 1702-1710 Pacific in Browne's Addition was purchased recently by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bayne of Spokane who plan extensive interior renovation of the building. M.N. Anderson of Hege Co., Realtors, who represented both parties in the transaction, said the sale was in the$85,000 class. The seller was the Rose M. Ward estate.

In this 1958 file photo, another of the pioneer Browne's addition homes was sold recentl to be converted into apartments. It is the M.A. Phelps home, W 2118 Second. Built 48 years ago, the 14-room home will be converted into six apartment units. The outside of the three-story house is brick and granite adn the foundation walls are three feet thick. L.J. Lambert of Gertrude Lambert & Son Realty company handled the sale.

In this 1975 file photo, owners of the historic Clark Mansion in Browne's Addition will be getting a second shot at converting it to a restaurant. So far there are no petitions against the special permit for the Clark Mansion, said Jerry Clay, Zoning Board director. The special permit must be approved by the Zoning Board and City Council.
