Salvation Army 125 years

Spokane is one of the earliest cities reached by The Salvation Army, about 25 years after founder William Booth started the organization in London to reach the poor and destitute.

Dec. 19, 1946. Salvation Army Prepares Big Bag of Christmas Toys. The Salvation Army gave more than 2,000 toys to needy families during the 1946 Christmas season. Many of the toys for the younger tots were new, while those for the other children were remade. Clarence Prothero, left, and William Frazier are repainting and repairing toys for older children.

August 15, 1951. Camp Music Practice. A group of young musicians attending the Salvation Army music camp at Camp Gifford, Deer lake, are shown at practice. Lt. Harold Broughton of Wenatchee is directing. Broughton is the son of the late Brig. William Broughton "march king of the Salvation Army," who directed the music camp at Gifford the year before. The camp closed for the summer on August 16th, following a concert the night before at the Salvation Army Citadel corps here.

Soldier Richard Richmond, a Rogers High School student, mans the Salvation Army kettle in November 23, 1956. He is wearing the Salvation Army uniform and ringing the familiar bell. The money was collected to help the disadvantaged, the homeless and those in convalescent homes or hospitals during the holiday season.

Youth Center Due. This church and adjacent parsonage at Indiana and Lidgerwood, plus a second house, have been purchased by the Salvation Army as the site of its new Citadel Corps and youth center, April 24, 1964. Presently Lidgerwood Faith Temple, the building earlier housed First United Brethren Church and originally, the Pilgrim Congregational Church, erected in 1901. The structure will be razed and the houses will serve as temporary facilities until the new corps building is erected. A youth gymnasium will be erected where the houses stand.
